Chris J. Schaefer, MD, is a skilled and board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in fractures, painful knee, foot and ankle injuries, and surgical infections. At Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Center in St. Joseph, Missouri, Dr. Schaefer is dedicated to serving the people of St. Joseph and surrounding areas with high-quality orthopedic care.
After finishing an undergraduate degree at the University of Missouri (Mizzou or MU) in Columbia, where he majored in biology and graduated cum laude, Dr. Schaefer obtained his MD from MU School of Medicine. Postgraduate, he completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at MU and an Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship at the University of Kentucky (UK) in Lexington.
Dr. Schaefer is passionate about continuing education. He serves as a Department of Orthopaedic Surgery-Assistant Professor at the University of Missouri Healthcare (MU Health). He also volunteers with the Mizzou Med Mentorship, where he mentors pre-medical undergraduate students and meets with them to discuss issues relating to medical school.
A team physician for (UK) and Georgetown College varsity athletes since 2017 and a Jefferson City High School team physician since 2018, Dr. Schaefer feels fortunate to have taken care of some truly bright and remarkable athletes. Providing his patients with personalized and evidence-based care, he helps young athletes get back to the games and activities they love.
His professional society memberships include Missouri State Orthopaedic Association (MSOA), Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA), American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), and American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM).
When Dr. Schaefer isn’t taking care of patients at Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Center, he enjoys maintaining an active lifestyle. You’re likely to find him outdoors playing basketball, soccer, softball, or golf. Dr. Schaefer is fond of running, and he has completed multiple half marathons.
