About Dr. Smith

A founding member and managing partner of Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Center, C. Daniel Smith, DO, is also a founding member of St. Joseph Center for Outpatient Surgery and previously served as team physician for Missouri Western State University for nearly 20 years. He is available to see patients at the Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Center office in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Dr. Smith stays up to date on the rapid advances of orthopedic medicine to ensure better outcomes for his patients and offers total hip, knee, and shoulder replacement as well as reverse total shoulder replacement and knee and shoulder arthroscopy. Additionally, he believes in the inherent ability of the body to heal and tries to be conservative in his approach to surgery, only pursuing surgery if nonsurgical options have proven unsuccessful.

After graduating from the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, Missouri, with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and biology, Dr. Smith attended Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Missouri, to earn his medical degree. He went on to complete his internship and orthopedic residency at OhioHealth Doctors Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. After his residency, he chose to undergo additional specialty training through an AO/ASIF traumatology fellowship in Neuchâtel, Switzerland.

Dr. Smith enjoys working in a specialty involving patients who are driven to regain health and are motivated to return to normal lifestyles after their injuries, and he stays active himself by enjoying long-distance hiking. He also spends his spare time woodworking, boatbuilding, sailing, and skiing. Dr. Smith has numerous published articles in the magazines Fine Woodworking and Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors, as well as the British magazine Watercraft regarding woodworking and wooden boatbuilding.
